As the "main developer" at my company ;) it's my job to research new tools.

True. I know a lot of programmers who see programming as a means to some 
other end, and learn just enough to achieve that goal. I instead like the 
discipline itself, so I'm always looking into new things associated with 
computers and programming, which includes languages, libraries, and 
techniques. One reason I want to avoid vendor lock-in is that it prevents 
me from taking advantage of new technologies if they're offered by a 
competitor.
